Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Clinches Historic Fourth Consecutive Term as Awami League Dominates Elections

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina secured an unprecedented fourth consecutive term as her Awami League party triumphed, winning two-thirds of the seats in the general elections marked by occasional violence and a boycott by the main opposition BNP and its allies.

Hasina’s party secured 200 seats in the 300-seat parliament, with final results pending as counting continues after the day-long voting on Sunday.

While the official announcement is yet to be made, the election commission spokesperson stated, “We can call Awami League winner with the already available results, but the final announcement will be made after the end of the counting of votes in the rest of the constituencies.”

Sheikh Hasina, 76, secured victory in the Gopalganj-3 seat for the eighth time since 1986, receiving 249,965 votes. Her nearest rival, M Nizam Uddin Lashkar from the Bangladesh Supreme Party, secured just 469 votes.

This landslide victory marks Sheikh Hasina’s record fourth consecutive term and fifth overall term, maintaining her rule over the strategically located South Asian nation since 2009. The election experienced a low turnout amid the dominating performance of the Awami League.
