Adani-led Firm Set to Initiate Door-to-Door Survey for Dharavi Slum Redevelopment

In February, a firm led by Indian billionaire Gautam Adani is scheduled to commence a comprehensive door-to-door survey, including data collection and biometrics, of up to 1 million residents in Mumbai’s Dharavi slum. Dharavi is considered one of Asia’s largest slums, covering 640 acres (260 hectares), and the survey plays a crucial role in determining eligibility for free housing as part of the area’s redevelopment.

The Adani Group secured the bid for the redevelopment in collaboration with the state of Maharashtra, though ongoing legal disputes surround the contract award. Only residents who lived in Dharavi before the year 2000 will qualify for the free housing. The last survey of the area took place 15 years ago, and concerns have arisen that approximately 700,000 ineligible inhabitants might face relocation, potentially impacting livelihoods or leading to higher rent payments.

The door-to-door survey, overseen by the Dharavi Redevelopment Authority, will utilize questionnaires to gather details about Dharavi occupants. This information includes their residential or commercial use of the premises, proofs of ownership, and biometric data. The survey aims to ensure accurate and up-to-date information as part of the larger effort to redevelop and revitalize the Dharavi slum.
