Arvind Kejriwal Approves Swati Maliwal’s Resignation from DCW; She Set to Contest Rajya Sabha Polls

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has given the nod to the resignation of Swati Maliwal, who currently heads the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW). Maliwal, one of the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) nominees for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, has already submitted her resignation, and Kejriwal has forwarded it to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena for approval, as per officials on Saturday.

Scheduled to file her nomination papers on Monday, Maliwal’s candidacy for the Rajya Sabha was officially declared by the AAP on Friday. The party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC), chaired by Kejriwal, announced the nominations, including the re-nomination of Sanjay Singh and Narain Dass Gupta for a second term in the Upper House of Parliament.

With Maliwal set to replace Sushil Kumar Gupta as the third Rajya Sabha MP from Delhi, Gupta, who also serves as the president of AAP’s Haryana unit, has expressed his intention to shift focus to Haryana’s electoral politics, the AAP disclosed on Friday.

The six-year terms of Sanjay Singh, Sushil Kumar Gupta, and Narain Dass Gupta are set to conclude on January 27. If required, elections to fill the three vacancies are scheduled for January 19, with the last date for filing nominations on January 9. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on January 10, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is January 12.

AAP, commanding a majority with 62 MLAs in the 70-member Delhi assembly, is poised for a significant presence in the Rajya Sabha elections.
