Cricket South Africa Ousts U19 Captain David Teeger Over Controversial Comments
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has removed David Teeger as the captain of the U19 team just ahead of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup, set to commence next week. The decision was prompted by pro-Israel remarks made by Teeger last year, expressing support for Israeli soldiers in the conflict with Palestine.
Teeger, while not expelled from the squad, will no longer lead the team in the upcoming tournament. CSA cited concerns of potential conflicts or violence, especially amidst anticipated protests related to the war in Gaza. The decision was made “in the best interests of all the players, the SA U19 team, and David himself,” according to CSA.
The move drew criticism from ‘Talk TV’ host Piers Morgan. CSA, in a statement, highlighted their duty to safeguard the interests and safety of all participants and spectators during the World Cup, acknowledging security and risk updates related to potential protests.
