Enhancing global preparedness for natural disasters

Our guiding principle is both straightforward and ambitious: No one should be caught off guard by a natural disaster.

These words come from the Vice President of Google and General Manager of Google Research. Today marks International ShakeOut Day, a time when millions engage in earthquake drills. Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System leverages smartphones to create a worldwide network that can alert individuals before the tremors start, and this system is being extended to additional countries and regions.

When natural disasters occur, having advance warnings and reliable information is crucial for helping people to prepare, respond, and remain safe. Earthquakes are just one focus of Google’s broader initiative to enhance crisis resilience. Additionally, our artificial intelligence models are designed to help individuals get ready for various other types of natural calamities.

In 2025, Google facilitated the connection of individuals with crisis information an average of over 10 million times per day.

Our north star remains: No one should be surprised by a natural disaster.
