Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai recently announced changes within the Google DeepMind (GDM) teams, highlighting new leadership roles for Demis Hassabis and Koray Kavukcuoglu. Sundar and Demis shared updates with employees, emphasizing their commitment to advancing artificial intelligence (AI).
Recent achievements showcase substantial growth in Google’s AI capabilities, with significant progress seen across various sectors such as Search, YouTube, and Cloud. The Gemini models, in particular, have gained popularity, boasting over 950 million active monthly users. Meanwhile, AI research continues to achieve groundbreaking breakthroughs, including recent advancements in Gemini Robotics.
Recognizing the importance of staying at the forefront of AI innovation, Sundar, Demis, and Koray are implementing changes to enhance focus on the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and scientific endeavors. Demis Hassabis will transition to a new role as Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. He will maintain strong connections with the GDM teams, advising on models and research, while continuing his leadership at Isomorphic Labs.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously the Chief Technology Officer and Chief AI Architect of GDM, will now serve as Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind. Reporting directly to Sundar, Koray will lead the development of Gemini models, Frontier AI research, and oversee the Gemini app and developer teams. His experience includes founding the deep learning team and contributing to breakthroughs like WaveNet and DQN.
Jeff Dean, after a remarkable 27-year tenure, will embark on a new venture alongside Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat. Together, they plan to establish an independent public benefit corporation focusing on accelerating discoveries in machine learning (ML), science, and engineering. Google will support them as a founding investor and Cloud partner, collaborating on research frameworks for ML systems.
