India Records Highest Daily Covid-19 Cases in 227 Days; Active Cases at 4,309

India reported 841 new cases of Covid-19, marking the highest daily count in 227 days, with 4,309 active cases, as per the health ministry’s latest update on Sunday.

Over a 24-hour period, three new Covid-related fatalities were recorded—one each in Kerala, Karnataka, and Bihar. This recent surge in daily cases comes after India had registered 865 new cases on May 19.

While the daily case numbers had reduced to double digits until December 5, a resurgence has been observed, attributed to the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions.

During the peak of the pandemic, India experienced daily case numbers in lakhs, with over 4.5 crore people infected and more than 5.3 lakh deaths in about four years since the pandemic’s onset in early 2020.

The number of recoveries from the disease has surpassed 4.4 crore, boasting a national recovery rate of 98.81%, as per the ministry’s website.

The ongoing vaccination efforts in India have resulted in the administration of 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines, as reported on the ministry’s website.
