India reports 774 new Covid-19 cases, active cases at 4,187

India has registered a daily surge of 774 COVID-19 cases, maintaining an active case count of 4,187, as per the latest update from the Union health ministry on Saturday.

In the past 24 hours, two fatalities were recorded, one each from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. The recent increase in cases started after December 5, attributed to cold weather conditions and the emergence of the new COVID-19 variant, JN.1.

Despite the rise, the available data suggests that the JN.1 variant is not causing a significant spike in new cases or leading to increased hospitalizations and mortality. Of the current active cases, more than 92 percent are recuperating under home isolation. The country has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the Delta wave reaching its peak in April-June 2021, reporting 4,14,188 cases and 3,915 deaths on May 7, 2021.
