Milind Deora Resigns from Congress, Set to Join Shiv Sena Today

In a significant political development, senior leader Milind Deora has tendered his resignation from the Congress party, bringing an end to his family’s 55-year association with the party. Deora, a seasoned politician and son of Congress veteran Murli Deora, is expected to join the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde later today.

Expressing his gratitude to leaders, colleagues, and party workers for their unwavering support, Milind Deora announced his resignation through a post on X (formerly Twitter). He had previously won the Mumbai South seat in 2004 and 2009 but faced defeat in the subsequent elections in 2014 and 2019 against Shiv Sena (undivided) leader Arvind Sawant.

Deora’s discontent with the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction winning the Mumbai South seat became apparent recently. In a video statement issued last Sunday, he warned that if such statements by an “alliance partner” persisted, his party might consider announcing candidates for seats.

Taking a dig at Deora’s exit, a Congress general secretary recalled the loyalty of Milind’s father, Murli Deora, who, despite having friends in all political parties, remained a steadfast Congressman. The move is expected to reshape the political landscape in Maharashtra.
