Nvidia Unveils GeForce RTX 4090 D, a Compliant Gaming Chip Tailored for China

U.S. chipmaker Nvidia has introduced the GeForce RTX 4090 D, a modified version of its advanced gaming chip, in response to U.S. export controls targeting China.

The company claims that this new chip represents a “quantum leap in performance, efficiency, and artificial intelligence-driven graphics.” Scheduled for availability in January, Nvidia designed the GeForce RTX 4090 D to align with U.S. government export controls, marking the first official launch of a China-focused chip by Nvidia since the Biden Administration’s October announcement of updated export rules.

According to a Nvidia spokesperson, extensive collaboration with the U.S. government occurred during the development of the GeForce RTX 4090 D to ensure full compliance with export controls. This move comes after two AI chips, the A800 and H800, previously created by Nvidia for the Chinese market to comply with earlier export rules, were barred for sale under the new regulations. Additionally, the top-of-the-line gaming chip, the RTX 4090, faced similar restrictions.

The launch of the GeForce RTX 4090 D demonstrates Nvidia’s commitment to adapting its offerings to navigate evolving regulatory landscapes, ensuring continued access to the Chinese market while adhering to international trade restrictions.
