S Jaishankar Emphasizes Deeper Ties Between India and Russia Beyond Diplomacy

During his visit to Russia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar underscores that the relationship between India and Russia goes beyond mere diplomacy or economics. Speaking at St. Petersburg State University, Jaishankar highlights the profound nature of the ties, emphasizing the role of scholars and intellectuals in fostering understanding and bonding.

Jaishankar stresses the importance of direct mutual understanding between India and Russia, avoiding external influences in shaping their relationship. He notes the ongoing efforts of both countries to identify new linkages and common points, with a belief that the intellectual world can play a crucial role in making a difference.

While acknowledging India’s economic growth approaching $4 trillion, Jaishankar outlines the broader vision for the country. He envisions India becoming a developed nation in the next 25 years, emphasizing that development extends beyond the economy to include awareness, consciousness, and pride in traditions, heritage, and culture.

The visit comes amid strong bilateral ties, with Jaishankar meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin. Despite global concerns over Russia’s actions in Ukraine, India has refrained from condemning the invasion, advocating for diplomatic resolution. Additionally, India’s increased import of Russian crude oil reflects the resilience of the India-Russia relationship amid international disquiet.
