Japan’s Service Sector Marks Steady Growth in December, Boosted by Demand Surge

According to a recent business survey, Japan’s service sector experienced accelerated expansion in December, propelled by robust demand and a surge in confidence. Despite a modest overall growth rate, the sector has been a consistent source of positivity for the world’s third-largest economy, boasting 16 consecutive months of growth. This resilience has played a crucial role in counterbalancing the challenges faced by manufacturers.

The final au Jibun Bank Service Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for December registered a reading of 51.5, showcasing an improvement from November’s figure of 50.8, which marked the slowest growth witnessed in 2023. Although slightly below the initial reading of 52.0, the index remained comfortably above the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction.

The service sector’s performance in December reflects the enduring strength of Japan’s economic landscape, with demand serving as a key driver. Despite being the second softest headline figure for the past year, the consistent growth trend throughout 2023 underscores the sector’s resilience and its pivotal role in supporting the broader economy.
