Ministries Establish Monitoring Mechanism for Duty-Concessional Steel and Aluminium Exports to the US

The Ministries of Mines, Steel, and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) are collaborating to institute an internal monitoring mechanism. This system aims to oversee the export of steel and aluminum products from India to the United States at concessional duties, addressing previous challenges faced by Indian exports.

Previously, Indian exports of these products incurred additional duties in the US due to Washington’s imposition of a 25 percent import duty on steel products and a 10 percent duty on specific aluminum products in 2018, citing national security concerns. In response, India implemented additional customs duties on 28 American products in June 2019.

In the latest development, the US has granted permission for these imports from India without the imposition of the extra 25 percent and 10 percent duties. This concession is reciprocated by India’s decision to eliminate retaliatory duties on eight American products, including apples and walnuts.

Moreover, both nations have reached an agreement to establish a joint monitoring mechanism. This mechanism facilitates the export of certain steel and aluminum products from India to the US, totaling at least 3.36 lakh tonnes annually, without incurring additional duties.
