Samsung unveils Galaxy S24 Series with advanced AI features, takes on Apple in premium smartphone market

Samsung Electronics launched its latest premium smartphones on Wednesday, equipped with multiple AI functions aimed at challenging Apple’s dominance in the market. The move comes in response to Apple surpassing Samsung in 2023 smartphone shipments, marking the first time since 2010 that Apple claimed the top spot.
The new Galaxy S24 series introduces innovative AI capabilities, including real-time two-way voice translation for phone calls in different languages—a feature Samsung claims is a first for smartphones. The on-device AI function, available in 13 languages, is powered by Samsung’s own generative AI training.
Other notable AI features include a “circle-to-search” function for image searches in Google, AI translation with customizable tones (casual, formal, business, social media), AI summaries and translation of voice recordings, generative editing of photos, and real-time video slow-motion conversion using AI.
Samsung emphasizes the security of on-device AI, highlighting that personal information remains on the user’s device without the need for cloud connectivity. Industry forecasts by Canalys suggest that while only 5% of smartphones shipped in 2024 will be AI-capable, this figure is expected to grow to 45% by 2027.
The Galaxy S24 series, available for purchase starting January 31, includes the base Galaxy S24 priced from $799 in the United States, while the higher-specification versions, S24 Plus and S24 Ultra, are priced at $999 and $1,299, respectively. Samsung maintained the prices of the base model and Plus from the previous year, with a $100 increase for the Ultra variant.
