January 2024: Winter Vacation Brings Extended Break for North Indian School Students

As winter takes hold in most of the states in North India, school corridors echo with the joy of winter vacation. The transition from 2023 to 2024 will be accompanied by a much-anticipated break, offering schoolchildren a brief respite and a chance to glance at the upcoming New Year holiday calendar.

Come January 2024, students are in for a treat with an array of holidays on the horizon. The anticipated drop in temperatures at the year’s outset hints at an extension of the winter vacation, providing ample time for students to gear up for the upcoming examinations scheduled for February-March 2024.

School Holidays in January 2024 kick off with the first week dedicated to vacation. The advent of the new year marks a collective closure in most North Indian states, with schools observing a holiday on January 1st. Winter vacation, spanning from January 1 to January 6, 2024, promises a leisurely start to the year.

The outlook for the second week depends on weather forecasts. If the sun graces the skies, schools may resume, else holidays may extend until January 14, 2024. The third week follows suit with school closures on festivals like Lohri and Makar Sankranti, accompanied by a holiday in many states on Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti.

A long weekend awaits on January 13, 14, and 15, 2024. Subsequently, a four-day hiatus unfolds on January 25, 26, 27, and 28. Schools commemorating Republic Day on January 26, 2024, will indulge in half-day holidays and special programs. The month wraps up with a Saturday-Sunday break on January 27 and 28.

In Uttar Pradesh, the academic calendar for 2024-25 has been unveiled, revealing that schools will be operational for 233 days in 2024. Students can look forward to 118 holidays, with the possibility of additional casual leaves depending on weather conditions and other factors.
