Tata Group secures IPL title sponsorship for 2024-28 with record-breaking $300 million bid

Indian conglomerate Tata Group has clinched the title sponsorship of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the 2024-28 period, making a “record-breaking” bid of $300 million, as announced by league organizers on Saturday.

The IPL, featuring top international cricket players and celebrity franchise owners, has evolved into the world’s wealthiest T20 tournament, boasting an estimated brand value of $8.4 billion. The league has proven to be a financial boon for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), with the media rights for the 2023-27 period fetching a staggering $6.2 billion.

Tata Group, already the title sponsor for both the men’s IPL and the Women’s Premier League, made an “unprecedented financial commitment,” reflecting the global impact and scale of the IPL on the international sports stage, according to BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

With IPL franchises extending into T20 leagues in various countries, the league’s growth raises concerns about players prioritizing lucrative multi-league contracts over international cricket. League chairman Arun Singh Dhumal emphasized, “The record-breaking sum…is a testament to the immense value and appeal that the IPL holds in the world of sports, setting a new benchmark and reaffirming the IPL’s position as a premier sporting event with global impact.”
