Usman Khawaja on track for 2nd test after concussion scare

Australian opener Usman Khawaja appears increasingly likely to play in the 2nd Test against West Indies this week after completing concussion protocols Sunday.

The veteran batsman retired hurt on the final day of Australia’s crushing 1st Test win last week after being struck on the helmet by a sharp bouncer. But Khawaja has steadily progressed through assessments.

“He completed normal concussion tests today,” Cricket Australia said. “Khawaja will continue being monitored for delayed symptoms. He’ll be evaluated again before returning to training prior to the 2nd Test starting Thursday.”

The day-night Test at The Gabba is a must-win for the Windies. Meanwhile, Australia looks to seal a 2-0 sweep after dominating the series opener by 10 wickets.

Losing Khawaja would force another reshuffling of Australia’s top order. Steve Smith recently moved up to open in place of the retired David Warner. Matt Renshaw is the likely candidate if Khawaja can’t play.

But the veteran appears on track to take his usual spot and anchor Australia’s formidable batting lineup in Brisbane as it eyes another emphatic victory.
