China Firmly Opposes External Interference in Maldives Amid Diplomatic Tensions with India

China declared its firm opposition to external interference in the internal affairs of the Maldives as Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu concluded his first official visit to China amid a diplomatic row with India. In a joint statement, both nations affirmed support for each other’s core interests, emphasizing the need to uphold the Maldives’ national sovereignty, independence, and dignity.

The joint statement also highlighted collaborative initiatives, including the endorsement of Xi Jinping’s doctrines, the Global Security Initiative (GSI), and participation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Notably, the Maldives expressed its commitment to the one-China principle, recognizing Taiwan as an inalienable part of China’s territory.

The visit comes amid a diplomatic dispute between the Maldives and India, marked by derogatory statements against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading to cancellations of Indian tourist reservations. President Muizzu’s visit to China includes discussions on enhancing security cooperation, aligning with his stance of not allowing foreign forces in the Maldives.

Analysts suggest that the strategic importance of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean region makes it a focal point for expanding China’s influence. The joint statement emphasized the Maldives’ appreciation for China’s vision of a shared future, the BRI, and commitment to practical cooperation, creating synergy for sustainable development.

During the visit, 20 agreements were signed between China and the Maldives, covering areas such as tourism, the blue economy, and digital development. Both nations expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the visit, underscoring the significance of advancing their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

President Muizzu, who arrived in China on January 8, held talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, discussing the implementation of various projects committed by China. The visit concluded with an invitation for Chinese leaders to visit the Maldives, further solidifying the diplomatic ties between the two countries.
