ICC Rates Newlands Pitch ‘Unsatisfactory’ Following India-South Africa Test

After a gripping 1.5-day conclusion to the second Test between India and South Africa, the focus has shifted to the pitch conditions at Newlands. India secured victory in a match where 23 wickets fell on the opening day, prompting criticism from India captain Rohit Sharma regarding match referees’ inconsistent verdicts on early match conclusions both in India and overseas. ICC match referee Chris Broad has now provided his assessment of the Newlands pitch, deeming it ‘unsatisfactory’ and issuing a demerit point.

Broad highlighted the challenging nature of the pitch, emphasizing the quick and occasionally alarming bounce that made shot execution difficult. Numerous batters faced challenges, with many wickets attributed to the unpredictable bounce.

While the demerit point itself doesn’t carry an immediate consequence, accumulation of six demerit points triggers a year-long prohibition for a venue from hosting international matches.

India captain Rohit Sharma expressed frustration with critics of Indian pitches, pointing out the lack of scrutiny when matches conclude early overseas. He defended the pitch in the Cape Town Test, stating his preference for challenging conditions and urging neutrality in pitch assessments. Sharma called for ICC and match referees to evaluate pitches based on their merits rather than being influenced by the countries in which they are located.
