Iranian-Backed Houthi Assault Temporarily Halts Maersk Red Sea Voyages
In a recent incident, Houthi militants linked to Iran targeted a Maersk container vessel with a barrage of missiles and small boats, compelling the shipping giant to implement a 48-hour suspension of all Red Sea sailings, Maersk reported on Sunday.
Maersk reassured that the crew aboard the vessel, Maersk Hangzhou, emerged unharmed, and there were no signs of any fire erupting on the fully operational ship. Undeterred, the vessel continued its journey northward towards Port Suez.
This assault marks the latest in a series of actions carried out by Houthi militants situated in Yemen. Their focus has been on Red Sea vessels, a strategic area where their actions are believed to signify solidarity with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, actively engaged in conflict with Israel in the Gaza Strip.
