New Year’s Day Bloodshed: Five Dead in Odesa and Donetsk Amid Escalating Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Tragedy struck as New Year’s Day turned into a day of bloodshed with five casualties reported in Ukraine’s southern Odesa region and the Russian-occupied eastern city of Donetsk. Denis Pushilin, the Russian-installed head of the Donetsk region, claimed four deaths in Donetsk, attributing the fatalities to Ukraine’s alleged “massive shelling from multiple launch rocket systems,” leaving at least 14 people injured.

In Odesa, Governor Oleh Kiper reported one fatality following a Russian air raid. Ukraine’s air defense systems engaged in repelling a drone attack, leading to falling debris causing fires in residential buildings across the city and injuring at least three people. A video shared on social media by Odesa Mayor Henadii Trukhanov depicted the aftermath, with broken windows in a damaged apartment. Trukhanov expressed determination, stating, “We will persevere, and we will win.”

The Ukraine Air Force disclosed that Russian air attacks extended to the Mykolaiv and Dnipro regions, as well as the city of Lviv. The escalation follows Friday’s barrage, where Russia launched 158 missiles and drones on major Ukrainian cities, resulting in at least 30 fatalities and over 140 injuries. The ongoing conflict continues to intensify, casting a shadow over hopes for a peaceful start to the new year.
