Russia Warns of “Grave Consequences” for Japan over Potential Patriot Missile Supply to Ukraine
Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, issued a stern warning on Wednesday, stating that Japan’s move to supply Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine would have “grave consequences” for Russia-Japan relations. Tensions between Moscow and Tokyo have escalated significantly since Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine in February 2022, leading to Japan imposing economic sanctions in alignment with Western allies.
Last week, Japan announced its intention to send Patriot air defense missiles to the United States following a revision of its arms export guidelines. This marks Tokyo’s first substantial update to export controls in nine years. While Japan’s new regulations still restrict the direct shipment of weapons to nations at war, there is potential indirect support for Ukraine, allowing the United States additional capacity for military aid to Kyiv.
Zakharova expressed concern, stating that Japan risks losing control over the weapons that could end up in Ukraine. She emphasized that such an occurrence would be perceived as unambiguously hostile actions against Russia, leading to severe consequences for Japan in the context of bilateral relations.
