Sunil Gavaskar Acknowledges MS Dhoni’s Role in Propelling T20 Cricket Craze in India

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, in anticipation of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, has attributed the surge in enthusiasm for T20 cricket in India to the leadership of ex-captain MS Dhoni. Gavaskar specifically recognized Dhoni’s pivotal role in India’s groundbreaking victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup held in 2007, marking the inception of the renowned ‘Dhoni era.’

Reflecting on the significance of the T20 World Cup 2007 during a discussion on Star Sports, Gavaskar fondly recalled the excitement of witnessing cricketing legends like MS Dhoni and Irfan Pathan securing the coveted trophy for India. He emphasized that the triumph played a crucial part in igniting the T20 frenzy in the country, a format that was relatively unfamiliar before 2007. Furthermore, Gavaskar noted that India’s success in T20 cricket also paved the way for the flourishing Indian Premier League (IPL).

“I vividly remember being present at the 2007 T20 World Cup, witnessing the exhilarating performances of MS Dhoni and Irfan Pathan. That historical win not only propelled the craze for T20 cricket in India but also played a vital role in the success of the IPL,” remarked Gavaskar.
